STEW’S IN EAST MEADOW WELCOMES THE CHEESE LADY
Two Guinness Book of World Records Holders
Celebrate the Grand Opening of Stew Leonard’s Second Store on Long Island
September 8 & September 9, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Stew Leonard’s, holder of a record in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the highest dollar sales per square foot of selling space, will welcome Sarah “The Cheese Lady” Kaufmann, who set the Guinness World Record for Largest Cheese Carving at 925 pounds, for a special cheese carving event in honor of Stew Leonard’s new store in East Meadow, N.Y. on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9.
Cheese and farm-fresh dairy have always been synonymous with Stew Leonard’s as the Leonard family’s roots date back to the 1920s when Charles Leo Leonard started Clover Farms Dairy in Norwalk, Conn. Kaufmann, who earned the nickname “The Cheese Lady” for her decades-long career carving intricate cheese sculptures, will carve a “mammoth” wheel of Wisconsin cheddar cheese as customers watch in the deli department of Stew Leonard’s in East Meadow. Using simple ceramic wire loop tools, cheese wires, and a draw knife, her carvings will include a 3-D relief image of a Divco truck, the vehicle used by Stew Leonard Sr. to deliver milk from his family’s dairy in the early 1950s (a replica of the truck will also be displayed in the new East Meadow store). After the carvings are complete, the cheese will be served as a demo to shoppers and will additionally be cut and sold. Kaufmann’s appearance is courtesy of the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board.
Stew Leonard’s new store in East Meadow, N.Y. opened on Wednesday, August 23, 2017. The store’s knowledgeable cheesemongers buy direct from family-owned farmers and have amassed a collection of award-winning “Made in the USA” cheeses alongside a selection of time-honored international cheeses. Stew Leonard’s is a proud supporter of Wisconsin Cheese.
For more than 20 years, Sarah Kaufmann has been creating works of art in cheese. Her recent creations include Martha Stewart and Snoop Dog, Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy, Jimmy Fallon and many others. Her work has also been featured on Food Network, Discovery Channel, NBC Sunday Night Football, The Today Show, Disney On Line and an alphabet of other networks and websites. She primarily carves in cheddar because it is consistent, holds up well, tastes great and comes in big sizes.
