Rare Calico Lobster Snaps into Norwalk!

img_1437

Lobster on Display at Stew Leonard’s Starting on Jan. 11 & Will Be Donated to The Maritime Aquarium

WHAT:
Stew Leonard’s seafood department received an unexpected guest in a recent delivery of live lobsters from Maine: a 1.5 pound male calico-colored lobster!  The chance of finding a calico lobster is 1 in 30 million.

The half brown-half orange lobster, who is alive and will be on display in the seafood department of Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk in a special maritime tank staring January 11, will be a guest of the Leonard family until January 19, 2017.  After that time, he will take up permanent residency in The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk.

However, before this charming crustacean moves to his new digs in SoNo, Stew Leonard’s is asking kids to participate in a “Name Our Calico Lobster” contest!  From January 11-18, children ages 4-10 are encouraged to visit Stew’s in Norwalk and write in a suggested name for the lobster.  The winner of the contest will receive a family four-pack of tickets to The Maritime Aquarium.  (Please see in-store for complete rules.)

Stew Leonard’s sells nearly 1,000,000 pounds of lobster and more than 200,000 lobster rolls each year.

WHO:
Stew Leonard’s, a family-owned and operated fresh food store founded in 1969, has stores located in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn. and in Farmingdale and Yonkers, N.Y.  Stew’s earned its nickname, the “Disneyland of Dairy Stores” because of its country-fair atmosphere, with costumed characters and animated entertainment throughout the store that keep children entertained while parents shop.  For more information, visit Stew Leonard’s website at www.stewleonards.com.

The Maritime Aquarium is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to educate visitors about – and to create stewards for – Long Island Sound. It accomplishes this by allowing visitors to get close to more than 300 species native to the Sound and its watershed, including sharks, seals, sea turtles, river otters, jellyfish and other animals. One of the top places for family fun in Connecticut, the Aquarium also features hands-on educational programs and displays, public study cruises out onto the Sound, and Connecticut’s largest IMAX movie theater, with a screen that’s six stories high.  TripAdvisor.com reviewers rate The Maritime Aquarium as one of the Top 20 aquariums in the U.S. and No. 1 in New England.

WHEN:
The calico-colored lobster will be on display at Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk from January 11-18, 2017.
