Penne Bolognese

This hearty, meat-based sauce is a classic Italian dish.  Use penne or linguine to stand up to the thick and meaty sauce.

1. In a pan, sautée the onion in the olive oil until translucent. Add the garlic and cook until golden. Add the tomatoes, season with salt and pepper, and simmer for about 20 minutes.


2. Place the ground sirloin in a large pan. Cook over medium heat, stirring and breaking it up with a wooden spoon — about 7 minutes.


3. Add the tomato sauce to the ground meat. Stir and check seasonings. Simmer for 30 minutes.


4. When the sauce has cooked for 15 minutes, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente. Drain the pasta and return it to the pot. Add enough of the sauce to coat the pasta. Transfer the pasta to a large serving bowl and spoon the rest of the sauce over it. Sprinkle with parsley. Serve with the grated cheese.
