CONNECTICUT OFFICIALS TO OFFICIALLY PARDON THANKSGIVING TURKEY

United States Senator Richard Blumenthal to Officially Pardon Turkey Ahead of Thanksgiving Holiday

LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK – One fortunate turkey will not be on a dinner table this Thanksgiving… That is because he will be officially pardoned by United States Senator Richard Blumenthal and other Connecticut officials. Stew Leonard, Jr. will be on hand to support the official pardoning of “Ed” the turkey, on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at 11AM, at Stew Leonard’s Newington, located at 3475 Berlin Turnpike. This will mark the official pardon granted for a turkey in Connecticut and will allow “Ed” to live out his remaining days at a Connecticut farm.

Unlike “Ed” the turkey, over 45 million turkeys will not be so lucky this Thanksgiving season. There will be over 736 million pounds of turkey consumed by approximately 88% of Americans on this Thanksgiving holiday. Americans will spend approximately $991.16 million on Thanksgiving meals this year.

The turkey, a distinctly American bird, has been a fixture of this holiday since its inception in 1621. The first official Turkey Pardon was granted by President George H. W. Bush on November 14th, 1989, however, the tradition dates back to President Abraham Lincoln. It has since become American tradition beloved by all when celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday.
