Stew Leonard’s Newington Store July-September 2016 Culinary Classes for Kids

WHAT:
Stew Leonard’s Newington store will offer a number of cooking classes for children over the next few months, including an “Around the World” series that explores global cuisine and two Culinary Camp sessions in July and August. The children receive hands-on instruction in preparing various products as well as learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen and the importance of food safety.

Price is per child per class and payment is required at the time of registration. Classes will be held in Stew Leonard’s Executive Kitchen on the second floor of the grocery store in Newington, Conn. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult, except for the classes for toddlers (ages 2-5 years old), which requires an adult to supervise their little one.

Healthy Eating with Lisa Lynn & Stew Leonard’s (Toddler Class)

Join celebrity fitness and health expert Lisa Lynn for a healthy cooking class for kids at Stew’s Newington store. Lisa will read her best seller “The I Love My Body Book,” which helps kids build self-esteem and love the body they are in! Kids will get a copy of the book and hands-on experience preparing nourishing snacks, including strawberry gelato and veggie spaghetti.

Aloha! What better way to kick off summer than with a Hawaiian luau? Today we will listen to island music and create some delicious Hawaiian recipes. To begin, we will make juicy Hawaiian chicken served over a bed of rice. Then, we will make yummy pineapple mango salsa and mini pineapple upside down cakes for dessert! We will wash down our meal with a fresh, non-alcoholic piña colada. Lastly, each child will get to create and take home their very own paper lei!

Kids ages 6-12 are invited to Stew Leonard’s Culinary Camp! Price is $50 per day or $225 per week per child. A complimentary lunch will be served daily.

Around the World: Asia (Culinary Camp)
Monday, July 18 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Today we will prepare a variety of food inspired by Asian cuisine! We will roll homemade sushi, vegetable egg rolls, make wonton soup, and orange chicken over jasmine rice. For dessert? Chinese donuts and bubble tea!

Crazy for Cupcakes (Culinary Camp)
Tuesday, July 19 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Let’s get our baking shoes on! Today we will make four homemade cupcakes from scratch! On the menu: vanilla cupcakes with butter cream frosting ,double chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate fudge frosting, red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, and pink lemonade cupcakes with a light lemon whipped frosting.

Edible Science Activities (Culinary Camp)
Wednesday, July 20 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Let’s put on our mad scientist caps and step into our culinary lab! We will perform an array of science experiments using the ingredients found in our kitchen, including egg air pressure experiments, homemade slime, magic milk, homemade butter, homemade sidewalk paint and homemade volcanoes. Each child will make and take home a homemade lava lamp!

Day at the Beach (Culinary Camp)
Thursday, July 21 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Grab your flip flops and head on over to our beach themed kitchen! Today, we will focus on food you will find at the beach! We will create our very own edible sand castle! We will also make homemade ice cream, corn dogs from scratch, homemade peanut butter and jelly for sandwiches, and sand dollar cookies! **Parents note: nuts will be used in today’s class**

Rainbow Tie Dye Recipes and Activities
Friday, July 22:
9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
$50 per day/$225 per week

Somewhere over the rainbow, in Stew Leonard’s executive kitchen, lies a fun filled day with a variety of colorful recipes and activities waiting to be made! Today we will be creating different rainbow recipes and activities! We will make rainbow waffles and cupcakes. Along with this, we will tie dye t-shirts to take home, create crayon art canvases, rainbow dream catchers, assemble jelly bean bracelets, and plant a colorful flower in a tie dye planter!

Blueberry Madness! (Toddler Class)

Oh My Chocolate!
Tuesday, August 16 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Today we will be will focus on a truly delicious ingredient: chocolate! We will prepare chocolate lasagna, double chocolate cookies, homemade fudge, chocolate chip truffles, frozen hot chocolate, and a chocolate fondue!

Breakfast All Day
Wednesday, August 17 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Join us as we make some of your favorite breakfast foods all day, including strawberry cheesecake stuffed French toast, homemade cinnamon buns with cream cheese icing, breakfast pizza, tater tot breakfast casserole, cake batter pancakes, and smoothies!

Seasonal Fruit Recipes
Thursday, August 18 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

For all you summer fruit lovers, this is the class for you! We will focus on preparing recipes using the freshest summer fruits, including a homemade strawberry shortcake, homemade blueberry muffins, raspberry crumble bars, and whipped strawberry mousse in chocolate cups. We will also make watermelon kiwi popsicles and wash it all down with freshly brewed sweet peach iced tea!

Food Truck Festival
Friday, August 19 from 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

Satisfy all your food truck cravings in today’s cooking class! On the menu: homemade empanadas, Philly cheese steaks, taco bowls, fried mac & cheese balls, homemade onion rings, fried Oreos, and fried apple pie!

Kids will prepare each step by making homemade marinara sauce and ricotta filling to place between each layer, which will be accompanied by homemade garlic bread. Each child will be able to take their lasagna home to bake for dinner!
