Stew Leonard’s Newington Store July-August 2017 Culinary Classes for Kids

Stew Leonard’s Newington store will offer a number of cooking classes for children over the next two months! The children receive hands-on instruction in preparing various products as well as learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen and the importance of food safety.

Price is per child per class and payment is required at the time of registration.  Parents/caretakers are kindly asked to register children at least 24 hours in advance.  If a parent/caretaker needs to cancel a class, refunds will be given only if the store is notified 24 hours in advance.  Classes will be held in Stew Leonard’s Executive Kitchen on the second floor of the grocery store in Newington, Conn. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult, except for the classes for toddlers (ages 2-5 years old), which requires an adult to supervise their little one.

Today is National Chocolate Day! Let’s get in the spirit by creating our very own homemade chocolate. We will learn how to make peppermint patties, peanut butter cups, homemade Snickers, and cookies and cream cups.

Today, we will prepare breakfast inspired by Dr. Seuss’s book, Green Eggs and Ham!  We will whip up green scrambled eggs and ham and potato hash browns. Then, kids will sit back and listen to this all-time favorite children’s book.

Homemade Dog Treats
Thursday, July 13, 2017 from 2:00– 3:00 p.m. & 4:00–5:00 p.m.

Ages 6-12
Today we will prepare homemade treats for our furry friends. We will prepare bacon cheddar cookies, peanut butter treats, and pup-cakes. These recipes will have your dog wagging its tail for more!
 
Homemade Tortillas
Friday, July 14, 2017 from 6:00- 8:00 p.m.
$25 per child
Ages 6-12
Tonight we will prepare homemade tortillas from scratch. With our tortillas, we will whip up loaded quesadillas, apple pie tacos, and homemade nachos!

Culinary Camp Week 1
Monday, July 17, 2017– Friday, July 21, 2017
9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.     
$75.00 per day
Ages 6 -12
Join us for a week full of kitchen adventures.  Lunch will be served daily. Kids can join us for the entire week or pick specific classes to join.
•    Monday: Homestyle Favorites
Today we will focus on preparing our favorite comfort foods! On the agenda: mac and cheese, baked barbeque chicken, beef stew, chocolate chip cookies, cinnamon toast crunch bars, and homemade lemonade.
•    Tuesday: Around the World
Join us as we prepare meals that originated in different parts of the world. This includes: sushi from Japan, homemade raviolis from Italy, homemade tortillas for tacos from Mexico, pork schnitzels with mashed potatoes from Germany, and alfajores (dulce de leche) cookies from South America. We will also participate in an international food taste test!
•    Wednesday: Appetizers All Day
Let’s prepare the most delicious appetizers! On the menu: Philly cheesesteak sliders, loaded potato cups, Swedish meatballs, bruschetta on French bread toasts, pepperoni bread, cheesy bacon spinach dip, and homemade mozzarella sticks.
•    Thursday: Crazy for Cookies
Let’s celebrate our favorite cookie recipes of all time! The agenda includes: edible cookie dough, funfetti cookie sandwiches, Twix cookies, peanut butter chocolate chunk cookies, and Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies. **PARENTS PLEASE NOTE: Nuts will be used in today’s class**
•    Friday: Carnival Favorites
Today we will whip up some recipes you can find at your favorite carnival! We will prepare homemade ice cream, chili dogs, fried Oreos, homemade kettle corn, freshly baked pretzels, cheesy French fries, and fried dough.

Monday, July 24, 2017– Friday, July 28, 2017
9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.     
$75.00 per day
Ages 6 -12
Come join us for a week full of kitchen adventures.  Lunch will be served daily. Kids can join us for the entire week or pick specific classes to join:
•    Monday: Summer Fruit Recipes
We will use our favorite in-season fruits to prepare these recipes! We will make homemade fruit salsa with cinnamon crisps, homemade strawberry popsicles, white chocolate raspberry cheesecake bites, crepes with blueberry sauce, peach cobbler, and blueberry muffins.
•    Tuesday: Bakers Choice
Let’s get our baking shoes on and prepare these yummy recipes! On the agenda: homemade bagels, homemade donuts, cinnamon swirl loaf, buttery sweet cornbread with homemade cinnamon honey butter, and chocolate chip banana muffins. In addition, each child will decorate an apron to take home.
•    Wednesday: Refreshing Citrus Fruits
We will prepare these refreshing recipes using yummy citrus fruits! On the menu: glazed lemon poppy seed bread, cranberry orange scones, orange chicken and rice, chicken pasta with creamy cilantro-lime alfredo sauce, and an orange creamsicle milkshake! Each child will also decorate a reusable bag using citrus painting techniques.
•    Thursday: Day at the Barn
We will focus on recipes you can make at the barnyard! On the menu: homemade butter in a jar, cow print chocolate cheesecake bars,  summer corn chowder, farm fresh egg recipes including cheesy bacon and egg breakfast bombs and country style biscuits! We will also paint a farm themed canvas to take home.
•    Friday: Chef Challenge
We will team up and prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Kids will have a variety of secret ingredients to use and must come up with their very own recipes!

Hawaiian Luau

Aloha! Take a quick trip to the Hawaiian Islands as we prepare chocolate covered pineapple pops, pineapple mango lemonade, and Hawaiian chicken kabobs with coconut lime rice.

Today, our instructors will teach us how to paint an emoji canvas step by step. In addition, we will make and decorate homemade sugar cookies to match our canvas!

Today, we will prepare homemade donuts from scratch with yummy flavored icing! We will bake and decorate them with a variety of toppings.

•    Monday: Cupcake Wars
Let’s get crazy in the kitchen as we prepare the following recipes from scratch: French toast cupcakes, s’mores cupcakes, cookies and cream cupcakes, and strawberry shortcake cupcakes.
•    Tuesday: Out of This World Day
Today we will create fun, intergalactic recipes! We will prepare unicorn cheesecake dip, galaxy milkshakes, galaxy brownies, unicorn bark, rainbow layered cake. In addition, each child will paint a galaxy themed canvas and tie dye a pillow case.
•    Wednesday: Savory & Sweet Sauces and Spreads
Join us as we stir up these delicious sauces! On the menu: spaghetti sauce, mixed berry jam, nacho cheese sauce, garlic and herb spread, homemade caramel sauce, and homemade hot fudge sauce. We will use these sauces and spreads to create yummy dishes and desserts!
•    Thursday: Under the Sea
Today we will prepare beach themed recipes! This includes: key lime pie, cinnamon starfish crisps, oyster pearl cookies, sea shell pasta salad, homemade crabby patties, and Rice Krispies sand castles.
•    Friday: Stew’s Greatest Hits!
We’re bringing back our favorite recipes we’ve made! These recipes include: baked flatbreads, cheesy bacon potato bites, cinnamon roll pancakes with cream cheese icing, chicken parmesan sliders, and lemon blueberry whoopee pies.
