January – March 2016 Culinary Classes for Kids

WHAT:
Stew Leonard’s Newington store will offer a number of cooking classes for children over the next three months, including the popular “Book and a Bite” toddler classes and a new “Around the World” series that explores global cuisine.

The children receive hands-on instruction in preparing various products as well as learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen and the importance of food safety.

Price is per child per class and payment is required at the time of registration. Classes will be held in Stew Leonard’s Executive Kitchen on the second floor of the grocery store in Newington, Conn. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult, except for the classes for toddlers (ages 2-5 years old), which requires an adult to supervise their little one.

Book and a Bite (Toddler Class)
Tuesday, January 5 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Friday, January 8 from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m.
Ages 2-5
$15 per child (must be accompanied by an adult)
Today we will bake yummy dog bone-shaped treats! While we munch on our creations, we will sit back and relax as we read the book “Harry the Dirty Dog,” written by Gene Zion.

Basket Challenge
Monday, January 18, 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day)
Ages 6-12
$25 per child
Stew’s chefs will challenge our young chefs to a basket challenge! Kids will have the opportunity to create their very own recipes out of our selected items that will be revealed at the beginning of the class.

First country on the list: Italy! Kids will whip up some homemade ravioli and tomato sauce. We will also make mini cannoli cups for dessert!

$25 per child
First country on the list: Italy! Kids will whip up some homemade meatballs and tomato sauce to enjoy over pasta. We will also make fresh bruschetta, garlic bread, and mini cannoli cups for dessert!

Mardi Gras Party (Toddler Class)

Valentine’s Day Workshop
Friday, February 12 from 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m.
Ages 4-12
$10 per child
Let’s make a special treat for a special someone! This workshop will be held in 30 minute intervals. Each child will create half dozen chocolate covered strawberries with yummy toppings. In addition, you will be able to create a personalized Valentine’s Day greeting card!

Let’s Bake a Cake
Friday, March 4 from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Ages 6-12
$25 per child
Today we will use our baking skills and bake our own cake from scratch. We will also make homemade frosting and learn decorating techniques in order to decorate our cake! Pizza will be served for dinner.
