Stew Leonard’s Celebrates 50th Anniversary
50 Years of Fresh, Family, Fun
NORWALK, CONN., April 3, 2019 – Starting on April 3, family owned and operated Stew Leonard’s will mark its 50th anniversary with a calendar of events designed to celebrate with the store’s shoppers, Team Members, and local farmers. The celebration will culminate on November 30, 2019, with a party honoring the store’s golden anniversary as well as the 90th birthday of store founder Stew Leonard, Sr.
“When my father was delivering milk door-to-door in the 1960s, it was his dream to build a dairy store where kids could watch milk being bottled while their parents shopped,” notes president and CEO Stew Leonard Jr. “Over the past fifty years, my dad’s little dairy store has expanded to include meat, fish, produce, bakery items and more. But one thing has stayed true to my father’s original vision: Stew Leonard’s is still family owned and operated, and it’s still a fun place to shop!”
Stew Leonard’s opened its doors in Norwalk, Conn. on November 30, 1969, as a 17,000-square-foot dairy store carrying just eight items: milk, ice cream, cream, butter, eggs, orange juice, bread, and fruit punch. Today, Stew Leonard’s six locations carry 2,200 items, chosen specifically for their freshness, quality, and value. Over the past five decades, the farm fresh food grocer has sold more than 60 million bagels, 40 million sticks of butter, 30 million gallons of milk, 25 million cartons of eggs and 10 million pounds of filet mignon.
Every month from April through November, customers will enjoy special pricing, in-store demos and more while Team Members and vendors will be spotlighted and thanked for their contributions to making Stew Leonard’s a fun and fresh place to shop for 50 years. Highlights include:
– All shoppers, Team Members, and vendors will have the chance to include their digital photo on a large-scale mosaic wall, which will travel between all six store locations.
– Local farmers and vendors and long-serving Team Members will be spotlighted throughout the store through new signage and video, as well as online and through social media.
– A dedicated landing page on StewLeonards.com will share historical highlights, recipes, and fun facts about how Stew Leonard’s grew into the Disneyland of Dairy Stores.
– Special events including demos, kids’ events, and giveaways.
About Stew Leonard’s
Stew Leonard’s, a family-owned and operated fresh food store founded in 1969, has six stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn. and in East Meadow, Farmingdale & Yonkers, N.Y. A seventh store will open in Paramus, N.J. in the fall of 2019. Stew’s earned its nickname, the “Disneyland of Dairy Stores” because of its country-fair atmosphere, with costumed characters and animated entertainment throughout the store that keep children entertained while parents shop. Stew Leonard’s legion of loyal shoppers is largely due to the stores’ passionate approach to customer service: “Rule #1 — The Customer is Always Right”; Rule #2 – If the Customer is Ever Wrong, Re-Read Rule #1.” This principle is so essential to the foundation of the company that it is etched in a three-ton granite rock at each store’s entrance. The company’s culture is built around an acronym for S.T.E.W.: Satisfy the customer; Teamwork gets it done; Excellence makes it better; WOW makes it fun.
