RABBI HECHT AND LOCAL OFFICALS LEAD LIGHTING OF MENORAH AT STEW LEONARD’S

Wednesday, December 8, 5:30 P.M. Sharp

WHO: Rabbi Hecht from Beth Israel Synagogue of Westport/Norwalk; Norwalk Mayor Alex Knopp; Diane Farrell, First Selectwoman of Westport; Woody Bliss, First Selectman of Weston; Paul Hannah, First Selectman of Wilton; and Police Chiefs of Norwalk and Westport, Chief Rilling and Chief Alfred will be in attendance to conduct a ceremonial lighting of the Stew Leonard’s Norwalk store’s menorah the first day of Chanukah.

Families are invited to participate in the ceremony, which will include a musical celebration with traditional dancing, holiday songs and kosher cookies and juice. Children attending the event will receive dreidels and Chanukah gelt from Rabbi Hecht.

WHAT: Chanukah, the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day religious celebration where people of the Jewish faith honor their religious freedom and commemorate the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days.

The menorah is lit for eight-days to commemorate this miracle. There are nine candleholders on the menorah, one for each night of Chanukah, plus another one called the Shamash, which is used to light the other eight candles. Families gather at nightfall to rekindle the menorah flames, rededicate themselves to their faith, and share in festive meals.

WHEN:
  • Wednesday, December 8, outside Stew Leonard’s, located at 100 Westport Avenue in Norwalk.
  • The ceremony/photo opportunity will begin at 5:30 P.M. sharp.
