to the 107 Team Members and their families devastated by the earthquake in Haiti

NORWALK, Conn., Jan. 19, 2010 – Stew Leonard's, Connecticut-based fresh food grocer, announces the Stew Leonard's Haiti Relief Team in support of 107 Haitian Team Members who have been personally affected by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. The Stew Leonard's Haitian Relief Team began collecting donations on Monday, January 18th with 100% of all donations going directly to those in need.

Many of Stew Leonard's 107 Haitian Team Members lost family and loved ones in the earthquake and of those who survived, a great many of them are now homeless and left with nothing. The Stew Leonard III Children's Charities has pledged $25,000 to the cause and invites their extended family, the customers, to also make donations.

"For 40 years, Stew Leonard's has maintained an unswerving commitment to our Team Members, understanding that you can't have a great place to shop without first making it a great place to work," said Stew Leonard, Jr., CEO of Stew Leonard's. "Stew's is a family business and that family includes our nearly 2,500 Team Members. The entire Stew Leonard's family is focused on providing assistance to these 107 Team Members and their families who are in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medicine."

Many of the Team Members with whom customers regularly interact have been affected. Here are just a few stories of personal loss:

  • Geraldine Boliere lost her husband’s entire family (Norwalk cashier)
  • Exana Rene lost four members of her immediate family (Norwalk Bakery)
  • Robert Cherubin, recently traveled to Haiti with his children and has still not made contact with some family members, everyone else is homeless (Yonkers kitchen manager)

Loss Counselor, Dr. Lateef Habib from Norwalk Hospital, will provide grief counseling to Stew Leonard’s Team Members and community members who would like to join. This session will be held on Wednesday, January 20th, 4-5pm at the Norwalk Store.

About Stew Leonard's
Stew Leonard's, a family-owned and operated fresh food store founded in 1969, has four stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn. and Yonkers, N.Y. Stew's earned its nickname, the "Disneyland of dairy stores" because of its country-fair atmosphere, with costumed characters and animated entertainment throughout the store that keep children entertained while parents shop. Stew Leonard's legion of loyal shoppers is largely due to the stores' passionate approach to customer service: "Rule #1 -- The Customer is Always Right"; Rule #2 – If the Customer is Ever Wrong, Re-Read Rule #1." This principle is so essential to the foundation of the company that it is etched in a three-ton granite rock at each store's entrance. The company's culture is built around an acronym for S.T.E.W.: Satisfy the customer; Teamwork gets it done; Excellence makes it better; WOW makes it fun.
