STEW LEONARD'S YONKERS STORE INVITES COMMUNITY TO CELEBRATE CHANUKAH
Festival of Lights Celebration Includes 21-Foot Menorah Lighting, Singing and Party to Follow
COMMUNITY AND MEDIA WELCOME SUNDAY, DECEMBER 21 at 5:30 P.M.
WHAT:
Stew Leonard's Yonkers store invites the Westchester community to celebrate the first night of Chanukah on Sunday, December 21.
The celebration begins with Cantor Chanin Becker of Scarsdale Synogogue-Temples Tremont and Emanu-El leading traditional Chanukah song-singing, followed by the lighting of a 21-foot menorah. After the lighting ceremony, all are invited upstairs to the conference room for potato pancakes (latkes) and apple sauce, hot cocoa and juice.
In Hebrew, the word Chanukah means dedication or consecration, as the holiday commemorates the rededication of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem. It was thought there was only enough oil to light the eternal flame in the temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, and so the holiday is also referred to as the Festival of Lights.
The eight-day celebration is observed by lighting a special candelabrum, the menorah, each night. The menorah has nine candleholders, one to commemorate each night of Chanukah plus the shamash, which holds an additional candle used to light the other eight.
