Stew Leonard's Newington Store Offers Children's Apple Tour and Cooking Classes in Celebration of the Local Fall Harvest
WHAT:
Stew Leonard's Newington store is offering an apple tour and cooking class in celebration of the fall harvest of locally-grown apples.
The children go on a tour through the produce section of the store, where they can see first hand the many different varieties of apples grown locally in Connecticut and New York. Next, the children will taste the different varieties to learn about the unique tastes and textures, and which apples are best for eating or used for baking.
The children receive hands-on instruction in preparing apple butter, apple sauce, apple turnovers, baby apple pancakes and Waldorf salad. They also learn about the importance of measuring, cooperation skills in the kitchen and the importance of food safety.
Not only do the children get to taste their creations, at the end of the class they participate in a "graduation" ceremony where they receive a chef's hat and medal, along with the recipes of the dishes they made.
The classes are open to children ages seven through 12. Children do not need to be accompanied by an adult, although parents are welcome to watch.
