FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESTEW LEONARD'S LITTLE FARMS OPEN FOR SEASON WITH CELEBRATIONS AND EXCITING NEW ADDITIONSStew's Little Farms Celebrate Arrival of Baby Animals for First TimeNORWALK, Conn., April 18, 2007 – Stew's Little Farms open for the season at the Norwalk and Danbury, Connecticut and Yonkers, New York locations on Saturday, April 26th with some exciting new additions. For the first time, Stew's Little Farms will have baby cows, goats and sheep all between the ages of two and four weeks old. To welcome the new arrivals, each Little Farm is hosting a "Name our Baby Farm Animals" contest and special opening celebration. Each Stew's Little Farm location will host a celebration on Saturday, April 26th from 9:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. for the arrival of two baby cows, two baby goats and two baby sheep with costumed characters, snacks and fun give-aways. At the celebrations, winners of the "Name our Baby Farm Animals" contests will be announced and receive a prize in addition to getting their picture taken with the animal they named and the farmer who raised the animal. Kids ranging from four to 12 may participate in the contest by visiting the Stew's Little Farm at the store from now through Friday, April 25th, viewing photos of the animals to arrive, and dropping their recommended names into the suggestion box. "For many families it is a tradition to visit Stew's Little Farm each time they shop the store," says Stew Leonard, Jr. "With baby animals on the farms, kids can watch them grow and mature between visits." In mid-May, two-to-four week old baby chicks, ducks and turkeys will join the baby cows, sheep and goats already at each of Stew's Little Farms. The baby cows will be returned to the farms they were born on in mid-July, as they will have become too big for the Little Farms, and be replaced with new baby cows. The baby animals were all born on and provided by local Connecticut farms. During their stay at Stew's Little Farms, the animals receive regular check-ups from highly-esteemed veterinarians, are watched by full-time attendants and fed twice daily at 7:30 A.M. and 4:00 P.M. Visitors are welcome to watch the animals being fed. Several improvements were made to each of the farms for the 2008 season. Oscillating fans were installed to increase ventilation, the nutrition content of the animal feed has been enhanced and comprehensive clean ups and basic repairs have been completed. The Danbury farm has also been fortified with sturdier fencing and an upgraded waterway. Stew's Little Farm began when Stew Leonard, Sr. had to relocate his Norwalk-based Clover Farms Dairy upon the building of the new Route 7 highway. He set his sights on an old farm on U.S. Route 1, owned by Hazel Schultze, who didn't want to sell as she wanted the pasture for her sheep. Stew visited her over the next few weeks and came up with the idea that if Mrs. Schultze sold him the land, he would build a farm for her sheep. He would even add some goats, ducks and chickens to make it a "real" farm, and she could visit with her sheep every day. This is how "Stew's Little Farm" began and it has grown steadily ever since. Since the original store opened in 1969, there has always been a "Stew's Little Farm" where families could come, enjoy the outdoors, have some ice cream and watch the animals. Stew Leonard's, a family-owned and operated grocery founded in 1969, has four stores in Norwalk, Danbury, and Newington, Conn. and Yonkers, NY. The company has been named among FORTUNE magazine's "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" for the past seven consecutive years.
