IT'S SHEEP SHEARING TIME AT STEW’S LITTLE FARM!
Saturday, June 21, 2014 at the Norwalk & Danbury, CT and Yonkers, NY Little Farm Locations
It is sheep shearing time at Stew’s Little Farm and kids are invited to come and watch. On Saturday, June 21, 2014 farmers Dave, Diane and Rachel, sheep shearers from a local Connecticut farm, will visit all three Stew's Little Farms to shear the two sheep at each farm.
When performed by a skilled shearer, it takes just a few minutes to shear each sheep. During the sheep shearing demonstration, the farmers will teach children about how and why shearing is done and how the wool is used once it is removed.
Shearing is the process by which the wool fleece of a sheep is removed. Sheep are typically sheared once a year in late spring in order to keep them cool during the hot summer months. While shearing does not hurt the sheep (it is like getting a haircut), it should be conducted by a skilled shearer so the animals are shorn efficiently without cuts or injuries to them or the person performing the shearing.
Customers will also have the chance to welcome turkeys and baby birds to the farm after the sheep shearing event. The Danbury store will additionally welcome piglets to their Little Farm for the first time ever!
Stew's Little Farms began when Stew Leonard, Sr. had to relocate his Norwalk-based Clover Farms Dairy upon the building of the new Route 7 highway. He set his sights on an old farm on U.S. Route 1, owned by Hazel Schultze, who didn't want to sell as she wanted the pasture for her sheep. Stew visited her over the next few weeks and came up with the idea that if Mrs. Schultze sold him the land, he would build a farm for her sheep. He would even add some goats, ducks and chickens to make it a "real" farm, and she could visit with her sheep every day. This is how "Stew's Little Farm" began when the Norwalk store opened in 1969 and it has grown steadily at the Norwalk and Danbury, CT and Yonkers, NY locations ever since.
