A VALENTINE TO THE COMMUNITY
Stew Leonard's Offers
“An Evening of Filet Mignon & Dom Perignon”
Food and Wine Tasting to Benefit the
United Way of Norwalk & Wilton and United Way of Westport-Weston

NORWALK, Conn., January 31, 2003 – Wine and chocolate have been reported to be healthy for the heart, in moderation, of course. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, wine and chocolate may also be good for the community’s heart, due to a special food and wine tasting taking place on February 13 that benefits the United Way of Norwalk & Wilton and United Way of Westport-Weston.

Hosted by Stew Leonard’s, the event will be held on February 13 from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Stew’s Norwalk store, and features 50 of the top-ranked wines from around the world, including some of the ‘wines to watch’ in 2003:

  • Dom Perignon Vintage 1995; Rated 94 Points The Wine Advocate
  • Beringer Private Reserve Chardonnay Sbragia Cuvee 2000; Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of the Year, 92 Rating
  • Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 1997; Greatest Vintage Ever in Montalcino; 91 Rating Wine Spectator
  • Louis Bernard Chateauneuf du Pape 1999; 92 Rating Wine Spectator

In addition to great wine, Stew Leonard’s Paris-trained executive chef, George Llorens, brings the “City of Lights, City of Love” to life with some of his signature dishes featuring lobster, filet mignon and jumbo shrimp. Coincidentally, these foods were just ranked among the most romantic in a survey conducted by Harris Interactive -- more than two in five Americans (42 percent) consider lobster to be the most romantic food, followed by steak (24 percent), pasta (10 percent), shrimp (9 percent) and crab legs (5 percent). The menu will also feature a specialty imported cheese tasting and decadent dessert offerings, including Stew Leonard’s famous chocolate covered strawberries.

Tickets are available for $50.00 per person and can only be purchased in advance at one of the following locations:
  • The United Way of Norwalk & Wilton at 182 Wolfpit Avenue, Norwalk
  • The United Way of Westport-Weston at 489 Post Road East, Westport
  • Stew Leonard’s Wines, 55 Westport Avenue, Norwalk
  • The Hour Newspapers, 346 Main Avenue, Norwalk
Tickets will not be available for purchase at the door.

All proceeds from the evening will be divided among the United Way of Norwalk & Wilton and United Way of Westport-Weston.
About United Way
United Way organizations rely on annual fundraising drives to help support more than 100 health and human services programs in the community. These programs focus on the most important human needs – such as helping children and youth succeed, strengthening and supporting families, promoting self-sufficiency, building vital and safe neighborhoods and supporting vulnerable and aging populations. By relying on a vast network of volunteers, United Way is able to keep administrative expenses low, allowing an average of 85 percent of all funds raised to go back into the community.

“It is estimated that one in three households utilize a United Way funded agency at some point
in their lives,” said Richard Johnson, Campaign Director of the United Way of Norwalk & Wilton. “This number could go up as an increasing number of citizens struggle to make ends meet. United Way's participating agencies and programs provide food, shelter, job training and health care that make a difference in peoples’ lives and in the community.”

“From child care programs, to affordable health care, energy assistance, counseling services and disaster response – the array of prevention programs funded by United Way make it the most comprehensive way to make a difference for people in the community,” said Bernice D. Corday, Executive Director of the Westport-Weston United Way. “In most instances, United Way funding is what allows programs to offer a sliding-fee scale, based on the person's ability to pay.”

“This food and wine tasting benefit is guaranteed to be our best yet. We’re pulling out all the stops – our finest wines and champagnes, the most requested foods and desserts. And because all of the money raised goes back into the community where we live and work through United Way funded programs, for $50.00, it also makes it the best value in town,” said Stew Leonard, Jr., President and CEO of Stew Leonard’s.
